Cancer Screening

The Risk of Cancer Increases with Age

The risk of developing cancer increases with age. Over a third of the population will face a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. Age stands as the most significant risk factor for cancer, with the likelihood of developing the disease rising sharply after the age of 50. Adults over 50 are 13 times more likely to have cancer compared to those under 50. This increased risk applies universally, regardless of family history, as only 5% to 10% of cancers are inherited.

How Does the Cancer Screening Test Work?

All cells in your body, including cancer cells, release DNA fragments into the bloodstream when they die. These fragments are called cell-free DNA. The Galleri test analyzes your blood sample for cell-free DNA to determine whether it originates from healthy or cancerous cells. Cancer cell DNA has specific methylation patterns that serve as cancer indicators. Methylation, a natural process that modifies DNA activity, also provides information about the tissue or organ linked to the cancer signal.

Understanding Your Results

When cells in your body, including cancer cells, die, they release DNA fragments into the bloodstream known as cell-free DNA. The Galleri test examines these cell-free DNA fragments in your blood sample to determine if they come from healthy cells or cancer cells. Cancer cell DNA features distinct methylation patterns that act as cancer signals. Methylation, a natural process that alters DNA activity, also reveals information about the tissue or organ associated with the cancer.
