Accutane

Accutane is a potent acne treatment used for severe cases unresponsive to other therapies.

Know what

What is Accutane?

Accutane is a powerful acne treatment typically clearing acne in four to five months, effective for most breakouts. It’s used for moderate to severe, scarring acne that hasn’t responded to other treatments, including antibiotics. Despite many side effects, it can be safer than long-term antibiotic use. Over two million people have used Accutane, demonstrating its safety and effectiveness.

Accutane is a derivative of vitamin A and is naturally present in the bloodstream. High doses of vitamin A can have similar effects as Accutane but can be harmful due to tissue buildup. It’s crucial not to take vitamin A while on Accutane. The body quickly removes Accutane from the bloodstream, clearing it within nine days without affecting future pregnancies.

Learn about

The Effectiveness of Treatment

Accutane “cures” about half of its users, with no further acne treatment needed. In the first few weeks, 20% may experience worsening, and 1 in 500 may worsen significantly. Most patients improve, making Accutane the most effective treatment for severe acne. Typically, treatment lasts 4 to 6 months, but some may require an additional course.

Taking Accutane with food enhances absorption. Higher doses increase the chance of a cure but also elevate the risk of side effects, such as dryness from oil gland reduction. The dose must balance effectiveness and side effects. Accutane, a derivative of vitamin A, shares similar effects and risks with large doses of vitamin A, including potential birth defects if taken during pregnancy. However, it is cleared from the bloodstream within nine days and does not impact future pregnancies.

Take into account

The Side Effects

The most serious side effect of Accutane is birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Women must avoid pregnancy while on Accutane, using reliable birth control methods like the pill, plus an additional method like condoms or spermicides. Accutane should not be shared due to its severe risks.

Other side effects may include chapped lips, dry skin, nosebleeds, eye irritation, joint and muscle pain, hair thinning, rash, digestive and urinary issues, headaches, sun sensitivity, decreased night vision, and possible depression.
